Chapter 7

It had all happened very fast. Before Darkness even knew a fight had broken out the Imperial had killed eight people. It didn’t matter that the station was outside of Imperial domain. It didn’t matter that the Imperial was just a visitor and not the local police. Imperials are arrogant and believe their law should be followed everywhere in the entire universe.

The system was just a trading outpost that was a space station in orbit around a red dwarf. It was controlled by merchants from Ziot.  The Empire and the Republic both sanctioned each other and had trade embargoes against each other in their never ending war of arguing but not shooting.  What trade did happen between them happened through Ziot all while Mahmet pirates were trying to steal as much of it as they could get their hands on.

Darkness was working as ship crew under Captain Tzuda. He was a Republic Ally but had a license to leave his system for the sole purpose of transporting goods for the Republic. Tzuda had a Ctype called CT-9FF because she was number 2559 of her batch. He kept her for cleaning and allegedly other things.

Captain Tzuda was expecting to get a big payday so he treated all the ship’s crew to an evening out.  CT-9FF came along. She made some kind of mistake. Or maybe Tzuda just wanted to hit her. He often hit her but she was a Ctype, no different legally from a door or a bulkhead.

This was a bit of a grey area. Ziot didn’t ban Ctypes but also wouldn’t enforce ownership over one. If a Ctype ran the Ziot guards would shrug. If the master forcefully took it back, then they also just shrugged. However, the Imperials had a different view of things.

There are several things anyone who is in the same room as an Imperial needs to know in order to not die.

The first was that if an Imperial hits you, you can not hit them back.

Second, if you do hit an Imperial, and he doesn’t hit back, you had better stop right there.

Imperials live by very strict rules that only they fully understand. The gist is that for an Imperial, if you don’t want to take the beating for it, then don’t do it. Also, it is treason punishable by death for an Imperial to surrender. They fight to the death, no matter how small the matter. If an Imperial hits you then it is a beating because the Imperial has judged that you did something wrong. So he expects, and even demands that you take the beating for it. If you hit back, it means you reject their judgment and are willing to fight to the death for your honor.

The third thing everyone knows about Imperials is you never want to fight one to the death. They’re crazy. They train their children from the time they can lift a sword to fight.  In Imperial society there are two classes of people. There are Imperials and Dependents. If a child can make it all the way through their training then they are a full Imperial with a position in the military and can fully participate in the political process.  If a child can not complete the training then they are a dependent. They are never allowed to hold office or any kind of responsibility in society but all the military Imperials will fight to the death to prevent any and all harm coming to a dependent.

And the last thing that you need to know about Imperials is you never hit a woman in front of them. That carries the sentence of beheading in the Empire. The Imperial who saw Tzuda hit CT-9FF in the bar didn’t care that she was a Ctype. He saw a man hit a woman and he was going to administer a beating for it. When Tzuda and the other crew of the ship fought back the Imperial slaughtered them. It all happened in an instant and the Imperial made it look easy.

Ziot police showed up and the Imperial stood there over the bodies, ready to be questioned. Darkness was hiding under the table while his former captain’s dead eyes looked at him. He was so scared he couldn’t control his breathing.

Darkness was taken by the police and he was sitting in a room by himself. He had to sit and wait there for over four hours. When the police finally came in they showed him the video of the incident. They had already typed up moment by moment what happened. They asked Darkness to read it and sign it.

“Are you going to let me go?” Darkness asked.

“You need to stay here to testify.”

Darkness nodded. “Ok.”

“Let me just ask, did you know Max?”

“Who?”

“This guy. The Imperial.”

“Never seen him before.”

“You didn’t come here to meet up with him?”

“No.”

“You don’t fly with him or nothing. You’re the only one he left alive.”

“I don’t know. I never seen him before.”

“Alright. Like I said, you’ll have to testify, so don’t leave. Your ship’s in impound.”

“I don’t have a ship.”

“The Adora.”

“That’s Captain Tzuda’ ship.”

“You can’t fly it?”
“I don’t know how.”

Darkness could leave but found himself with nowhere to go.  He couldn’t go back to his bunk on the ship and he had no money for lodgings. He ended up standing outside of the police station.  The night was becoming morning according to the station’s cycle clock.  The bars were closing and a place that served coffee was opening up. Darkness shuffled over. He had a lot on his mind. What was he going to do? Where was CT-9FF? Was he going to be paid? He didn’t even have anyone to call. His parents had died in the Social War against the Republic.

Oh, no. That brought up another problem. Darkness only had permission to be off planet because of Tzuda. With him dead if any Republic personnel find him here by himself Darkness would be in deep trouble.

Darkness ordered coffee and sat.  He didn’t know what to think.  He didn’t know what to do. The woman serving coffee and doing the other tasks to open the shop turned on the monitor and the news was playing. The murders in the bar the night before was the headline. Darkness asked her to change it but she ignored him.

The next segment was sports. Feuru was the red team and Tersud was the white team.  Red won by 22.

“Nice.” the woman said over by the counter.

“Did you bet on the battle?” Darkness asked her.

“I just made a hundred Pezims. I would have made two if the victory was by over twenty five. But oh well.”

The way a Ctype battle was scored was by counting the number of survivors. Feuru and Tersud were both Allies of the Republic. This meant no one outside the Republic could attack them without consequence. However, that didn’t stop the Republic itself from attacking or another of the Republic’s Allies. Whenever there was a dispute between two Allies of the Republic, war was often the answer but for a long time there were rules to it. Instead of sending actual people to fight, each system printed up ten thousand Ctypes.  Then, the two armies would be put on some barren moon and marched into battle. Whichever side had a survivor at the end of the battle won. Footage of the battle was entertainment in the Republic so both Feuru and Tersud could earn some money that way. Drones flew over the battle capturing details to be edited into a spectacle.

Ctypes had been illegal to have or bring into the interior of the Republic since the Servile war.  All Ctypes were to be destroyed on sight. However, the populace of the Republic enjoyed watching these battles.

Darkness was sitting and waiting. In his head he was trying to figure out how much 500 Republic Recoins would get him in Ziot Pezims. And then he wondered how long that would last if he couldn’t leave.

From the corner of his eye Darkness saw a flash of light.  The front facade of the police station exploded and was on fire. In case someone didn’t know, a fire on a space station means bad news. Darkness instinctively got low and then hesitantly looked up just enough to see out of the front glass of the shop. The Imperial, the one the police named as “Max”, was escaping and he didn’t care how many police officers he killed on his way out.

Chapter 6

On so many worlds there were so many languages and so many cultures. On one particular world they had a custom of naming their children in way that seemed stupid. Darkness was a young man from just such a world.

Darkness Grand looked at the time. It was late according to the ship’s clock. He was going to be sleepy the next day but it could not be helped. The words of Captain Tzuda still rung in his ears. Stupid. Idiot. Useless. Darkness didn’t know why it was the case that he did not instantly understand and perform perfectly after just being told how to do something.  He was the newest member of the crew of the Adora. He got all the jobs that no on else wanted to do, including cleaning the components for the landing gear retraction mechanism.

It could not just be cleaned. There was a proper order to it. First Darkness had to use a pipe to unlock a panel by using the pipe to rotate the bar coming out of the panel.  At the end of the bar it curved up and the pipe fit over that bit so it could be turned. Then once that was opened, one section could be cleaned. Then the next section could be opened. Darkness couldn’t open both sections at the same time because one would block the other. Darkness had not realized this earlier so he caught hell from the captain.

It was after working hours now and Darkness had used his own time to practice unlocking and locking the panel mechanism. In his mind he was breaking the whole process down into smaller steps.  First this tool was in his hand, then he had to put it down and use the pipe, then once that was open, he used the other tool again, then the spray, then the pipe, then the tool, then the spray, etc. He believed he had it now.

Darkness cleaned up and went to the bunk room. CT-9FF was asleep in a chair since she wasn’t allowed to have a bunk.  Captain Tzuda had made a rule that CT-9FF could only be in a bed for one thing.

Darkness went around her and climbed up to the top bunk.

“Boy, did you eat dinner yet.” Marvin asked.

“Yeah.”

“Well, then get to the kitchen.”

“For what?” Darkness asked.

“Dishes, idiot. I can’t wash them so it’s your turn.”

The alleged reason Marvin couldn’t wash the dishes was because of his robotic right hand. On the Allied world he was from, when a worker began to suffer from a condition known as trigger finger, instead of giving the worker time off to heal, they instead amputated the worker’s arm from the middle of the forearm and replaced the hand with a robotic one. It was faster than just letting the worker heal up. The planet always had to fulfill their quota to the Republic after all. Marvin was older now and joined the crew of the Adora to get off world at least once in his life. Now he was trapped. It was illegal for Marvin to disembark on any other planet and Tsuda had no plans to ever return to Marvin’s home.

Darkness Grand went to do the dishes.  As he was washing he thought that maybe he should go ahead and tell Marvin that he knew full well that his cybernetic hand did not in fact prevent him from washing the dishes. But instead Darkness decided to just wash them.  He remembered back to seeing the hand and then asking about it and hearing the story. It still sent chills down his back. Besides, his hands were also a lot cleaner after doing the dishes. In the shower he could never quite get all the black oil and dirt out from under his fingernails. He wore work cloves when doing dirty work but they just weren’t good enough to keep his hands clean.

The next day the Adora landed at a Republic station in orbit around a star that had no habitable planet. This system was part of the Republic but wasn’t one of the core worlds of the inner cluster so it did not mean death for the crew of the Adora to land there.  At the station two men who were Republic citizens came aboard the Adora for transport to Alrani.  The name sparked a memory in Darkness. Alrani was one of the worlds that had rebelled against the Republic when their application to become one of the members of the core cluster had taken too long. Darkness had lost his parents in that war.

The republic citizens came aboard and seemed unimpressed.

“What do you call this? You Allies don’t know how to clean nothing?” the Republic man said.

“I pray you enjoy your trip with us.” Tzuda said.

The Republic man slapped Tzuda. “Yeah. Don’t you dare look at me, Ally.” he said with all the intonation of a racial slur. “Get you sorry white ass out my sight. Bitch.”

Tzuda looked down and went away as the Republic man went to the cabin door and kicked it open instead of using the handle. The bang of metal on metal startled Darkness.  He saw how everyone was walking on eggshells as long at the two Republic men were on the ship.

Once the ship got underway the Republic men were in their cabin and Tzuda was verbally abusing anyone who caught his eye. The abuse from the captain continued until CT-9FF came to bring him his coffee. Tzuda saw her and punched her in the face with his fist. The coffee went all over the cockpit floor and then Tzuda kicked the Ctype while she was on her bottom.

“Clean that up.” he yelled at her. “And bring me my coffee right next time.”

“I’m sorry.” CT-9FF said while trying to get to her feet.

“I know you’re sorry.” the captain told her. “Next time I should just …”

…

“Jim was my older brother. He wasn’t really related to me but all of us boys had an older brother assigned to us to help us and mentor us. My older brother was Jim. In the youth corp all of us started out the same so it didn’t matter if you were the son of a noble, an orphan like me, or even the son of the emperor himself, you had to start at the bottom and fight your way up.

“Yes, fight. It was a constant life and death battle to make it to the next day.  We trained hard and we had to learn quickly. If someone didn’t, they wouldn’t make it. A boy in my squad missed a shot during target practice one time and we all got beatings so hard that we had to go to sickbay for days. When we got out we all ganged up on the kid who had missed the shot and beat him for doing that to us. When he got out of sickbay a month later he never missed a shot again.

“The stakes were high.  There were only three outcomes at the end of the training. We’d be soldiers in the Imperial Army or we’d be dead. There was also the third outcome which somehow felt like the worst one. If a boy got kicked out he’d never be able to join the military. He’d be a lower class person the rest of his life.

“The incident happened when I was 13. Jim was 14 and he’d been playing cards versus another boy, Brandon, who was 16. An argument happened and the other boy accused Jim of cheating.  I honestly didn’t know if Jim was cheating or not but he was very good at cards and I knew never to bet anything against him. Jim would not accept that insult to his honor so he punched the older boy.

“There is a rule everyone knows in the Empire. Unless you’re willing to take a beating for it you had better not do it. That older kid had no right to accuse Jim of cheating just because he couldn’t beat him at a card game. With that attitude how did he ever make it to 16 and still be in the corp?  So Jim punched him as just about anyone would.  You can’t say shit like that about people and expect them to not hurt you.

“Another rule everyone in the Empire knows is the best fight is the one the doesn’t happen. Jim punched the older boy for insulting his honor.  That should have been the end of it.  Just that much would not be considered a fight. Even if the older boy had blocked the punch it would not yet be considered a fight. But then to my shock the older boy punched Jim back.  That was the point of no return. Now it wasn’t just someone beating someone else for being stupid. By hitting back the older boy was doubling down on the insult and was making a public statement that he did not agree with Jim defending against the insult to his honor. Hitting back meant that the older boy was willing to either die or kill to back up his assertion.

“In the Empire soldiers can retreat if it is for a tactical advantage but can never retreat out of being a coward. You can’t run from battle. You can’t surrender either. All fights are to the death.  Either one of the two combatants will kill the other or the state will kill both of them.

“I knew those rules but in that moment when I saw that much bigger kid beating the hell out of Jim I couldn’t take it. I had never had any family of my own. Both of my parents had died on active duty before I could remember. I never had anyone who looked out for me until Jim became my older brother. He looked out for me from the time I was ten and we were best friends. He was the only family I had in the whole universe and here he was losing a fight and perhaps about to be killed over a card game.

“A stupid card game.

“I knew the rules as much as anyone but my emotions could not be kept in check. I couldn’t watch Jim die. I couldn’t. I had to act and my body was in motion before I knew it. I grabbed a pistol and I heard someone I passed asked me with alarm, What do you think you’re doing?

“I yelled for the fight to stop as I pointed the weapon at the older boy.

“Off of him. NOW! I’ll kill you. I mean it.

“The older boy got off and I grabbed Jim by the arm and pulled him away. I had the gun trained on the older boy and I was ready to shoot him the moment he made a move to attack me. But then the adults showed up.  When they got there this didn’t look like a fight anymore.  Once we were all separated the adults had to talk at length to figure out what was the correct thing to do.

“A few hours later word came about what the correct thing to do was. After interviewing several of the other boys who were there it was decided that this was a fight between Jim and the older boy. Therefore the fight should not have been interrupted.  That would likely mean that I would get lashes later but there was something else that had to happen first. We were all ordered to put on our ceremonial uniforms and assemble in the arena. The bright afternoon sun beat down on us and down in the center Jim was brought out by two adults force walking him. The older boy came out under his own power. Before them both on the ground was each a knife.

“One of the adults began to address all of us on the importance of integrity and honestly.  The parents for the older boy as well as Jim’s parents were brought into the area to say one last goodbye because one of the boys had to die.

“The older boy was still in prime condition because apparently Jim hadn’t been able to injure him previously. However, Jim was very badly injured and couldn’t even stand on his own. It was clear who was going to win this and all of us boys had to watch as this played out.

“Again I felt the pain in my heart. Jim couldn’t die. I would not allow it. I wasn’t allowed to interfere but I could not allow this. I must not allow this.

“Before the battle started right when the adults were leaving the fighting area of the arena my body yelled out and a scream escaped my throat. Everyone looked at me as I pushed my way to the front and jumped down from the spectator area. I undid the jacket of my ceremonial uniform and threw it to the sand along with my shirt. I walked over to Jim and pointed.

“This is against the law, I said.

“Some of the adults looked back and forth at each other and then three of them came out to me.

“What is the meaning of this, the headmaster asked.

“You can’t let them fight. It is against the law, I repeated as I helped Jim to his feet.

“What are you doing, Jim asked me.

“Shut up, I told him.

“Young man, you had better explain yourself to me. Now. You know the law. The fight must go to the death.

“It’s not Jim’s fight, I said.

“What do you mean, Jim asked me.

“Instead of answering him I backhanded him and at the same time I let go of the hand I had been using to help him stand. Jim fell back to the sand at my feet.

“He doesn’t belong here, I said as I pointed to Jim. I reached over to pick up the knife. This is not Jim’s fight. It’s mine. I was protecting an innocent and my fight should not have been interrupted.

“I heard Jim’s mother cry out in pain because she knew the meaning of my actions. I was saying that Jim didn’t have what it took to be a soldier and so the laws about soldiers shouldn’t apply to him. Jim would have wanted to protest but the only protest he could make that would count would be a physical one.  He was in no shape to fight even me, much less that other kid over there. I was saving his life and putting my own on the line but even still if Jim could have killed me just then he probably would have.

“The adults accepted my judgment and the headmaster announced to everyone that Jim was no longer ever going to be a soldier. He was out and so was any chance of him becoming a full citizen. He would forever be just an Imperial Dependent with no say in the political process or anything else of note unless there was an emergency or he got a private commission from a noble.

“The adults dragged Jim away even as he protested verbally. There in the sun I held the knife, brave enough to fight to the death, but not brave enough to look at him.

“He will always hate you.” Sarah said. “I’m sorry for that. In secret I thank you every day.”

Max nodded. He wanted to say more but the words were not coming. Jim’s wife was very pretty. She had come to meet Max out here at this Ziot trading station. Max had held out some hope that Jim himself would come out to see him but actually it was just Sarah and she told him that Jim couldn’t know that she’d met with him. She’d wanted to hear the story herself from Max to see if it matched up with the version Jim had told her.

Sarah’s parents were objectors so they were Dependents and Sarah was destined to only ever be a Dependent. Jim had been in training as a boy. He could have been a full Imperial and he blamed Max for not making it.

“I don’t know how I can explain it to you. Jim was going to die. He couldn’t even stand up. Brandon was 16. Three years older. He wasn’t injured at all. Jim was going to die. And … uh … I couldn’t let it happen. He was the only person in my entire life to ever love me. I only had a moment to think.” Max struggled with his words. He looked up at the ceiling and gestured with his hands to try to get his brain to make a sentence that made sense. “As an Imperial we’re supposed to protect the weak. I saw Jim on the ground and he couldn’t get up. He was going to die. So I accused him.”

“Just like that? They never talked about it to me.”

Max shrugged. “I had to fight Brandon.”

“How old were you?”

“Thirteen. We were each given a knife.”

“I guess I know how the fight ended. But how? He was 16.”

“He charged at me and I threw my knife at his neck. He never reached me.”

“Imperials never miss.” she said, repeating the worlds that were common knowledge across the galaxy.

Sarah had gotten the information she had been looking for. She needed to leave to get through security for her trip back to Imperial Domain. Max was sitting alone again and wondering how long he would stay here. He was on leave and could go wherever he wanted but the prospect of meeting up with Jim and making peace with him had been so tempting he had come out to a Ziot station to do it.

The Ziot were strange to Max. He had been on dependent worlds before where it was Imperial law in space but local law on the planet surface.  Max had training for that.  Being at this trading station in Ziot space was different. They were not dependents of the Empire.  They were trading partners of the Empire but the Ziot had their own fleet and did not rely on the Empire for protection.

In fact, the Ziot had their own money. Max had to change some of his creds to pezims and then was constantly doing calculations in his head to figure out how many creds different things would cost.

Max was considering going to a dependent world where gambling was legal. It was illegal in the Empire but legal on the surface of the planet. Max had never gambled before but he’d seen so many advertisements for gambling here on the Ziot station that it was getting him interested. However, if he was going to gamble and potentially lose money, he’d rather do it on a dependent world than here in Ziot space.

For now, Max had ordered a meal.  He was planning to eat dinner, get a good night’s rest, and then head out in the morning. The problem with that plan was some puny publican assholes came into the place. There were nine of them.  The Empire and the Republic had been at odds since before Max was born. The Empire was preparing for war with the Republic. They were on the lookout for any reason to start shooting. Any reason. Any reason at all. The Republic, with their fake government, and fake voting, and fake fleet, and fake laws was destined to fall to the Empire. Max himself felt his nostrils flare up and his face became hot as he looked at the puny publicans get a table.  The nine men seemed to be in good spirits.  Following behind them was a woman dressed in a boiler suit.

Max looked down at the meal he was halfway done eating but he could feel his anger coming up. Officially there was no proof but everyone knew the Republic was responsible for the attack on Invictus Station. Everyone knew it was true. There was officially no proof which was why war was not already declared but since the destruction of Invictus the Empire had been preparing for war. It meant to go to war. Every Imperial knew the names of the men, women, and children lost at Invictus.

Max brought food to his mouth and he felt his hands getting hot. He had to chew with his mouth open because of his breathing.

“Give me a reason. Just give me a reason.” Max thought to himself.

Max glanced over at the publicans again as if they had heard his mind they did give him a reason. One of the men slapped the woman who was with them. Striking a woman carried the death penalty in the Empire.

There was no thinking necessary. Max was an Imperial. He lived by rules. He lived by the law. The law was sacred.

Chapter 5

The sun was going down on Atolia but that didn’t mean it was time to sleep. To the contrary, at the governor’s mansion it was time to wake up. The music was playing. The drink was flowing. The lights were flashing. The people were dancing. Eight years ago Atolia was a war ravaged ruin and now it was becoming one of the most prosperous of the Allies.

Governor Lucius and his wife Ilia were hosting.  Lucius had come from nothing after his family had lost their fortune two generations previously. One of his ancestors had been one of the great men of the Republic but that was long ago.  Lucius was born with the famous family name but without two recoins to rub together. As a young man he’d worked as an actor but without much success.  Eventually he found he had no other option but to enlist in the fleet.

Lucius had excelled in the military.  His first big engagement was the Muzal war where Lucius had used a bit of diplomacy to get rival pirates to hand over the criminal leader the Republic was actually after. Lucius took the warlord Ladbin into custody and handed him over to his commanding officer, Narius. General Narius it seemed did not like the opportunity for battle taken away from him. Lucius was reprimanded and threatened with a court martial. He was told that as an enlisted man he should leave these kinds of high level tasks to officers.

After the Muzal war there was the invasion of the Venwa into Republic space.  General Narius for some reason came to dislike Lucius but promoted him anyway. Then after being promoted to a full officer, Lucius was made quartermaster instead of having a combat role. Lucius excelled at this.  In truth, he actually kind of enjoyed it. He made sure that the fleet had more than enough of everything it needed and he used his charm to make sure everyone handing over their goods was happy to do so. Lucius had to watch from the sidelines as the Venwa were defeated but he took pride in the fact that everyone was using provisions he had secured.

After the Venwa invasion peace would not last long. Politicians of the People’s Party in the Republic wanted to finally enforce their claim on Allied lands. When each Allied world had submitted to the Republic they had promised to set aside some of the land on their worlds for the Republic to come and use. However, the Republic for whatever reason had never done it. Those old treaties were all over two hundred years old at this point and politicians used the public land issue as a platform for elections.

The problem was the fact that on those Allied worlds people lived on those lands. Hundreds of years ago it used to be poor people who lived on those lands.  However, those families didn’t remain poor.  Some of them had grown to be wealthy enough to be among the elites of their world and they didn’t want to hand over the lands that had been in their families since before the Republic had ever come.

There was also the issue of citizenship. The Republic used to incorporate worlds into the core voting block as full members of the Republic but later changed their policy.  Allied worlds were allies to the point of subjugation.  They technically had their own governments but in reality the Republic told them what laws to make. Each world was always applying for full citizenship but the senate would find one reason or another to block it. However, there was a system by which the People’s party could somehow get individual Allies citizenship while still excluding the rest of the population.  That individual would then loyally vote for the People’s party.  The Constitution Party wanted to give the entire population of the planet citizenship at the same time or no one at all.

After the Venwa invasion some of the Allied worlds banded together to rebel against the Republic.  General Narius split the fleet in two, putting command of the other half under Lucius. Narius expected Lucius to just hold the line and wait for Narius to finish his own campaign and then come to take over. However, Lucius was able to get a surrender from all of the Allied worlds on his side of the battle lines without any fighting.  When Narius had finished bombarding worlds he found Lucius was already celebrating victory in the capital.

After the War of the Allies, Narius went into politics and Lucius was set to be military governor of one of the worlds Narius had bombed in order to oversee the rebuilding. Atolia had many problems and initially Lucius had his hands tied on many of the reforms he wanted to do. However, soon after arriving the wealthy daughter of the former ruler was presented to him. She was Ilia.  Lucius was smitten with her. While his own hands as governor were restricted to the letter of the law, her connections and resources could put in place the infrastructure the planet needed to not only rebuild but thrive.

About a year ago the king of Blackbridge decided to declare war on Atolia.  Since Blackbridge was outside of the Republic and Atolia was Allied, this should have called for a response from the Republic. However, since Atolia had recently rebelled White was informed that no defense was coming. The Republic wanted Atolia to feel what it would be like to not have the Republic’s protection. So Lucius organized the planet’s population for war.  He borrowed the tactic Narius himself had used. He used the Ctype soldiers to train the planet’s militia.

The Blackbridge fleet came and attacked. They killed seventy million people in a single day. Lucius had no backup from the Republic. He had no supply line. He had no intelligence community. But what he had were men fighting for their homes and families and everyone else on the planet doing what they could for the war effort.

The attack by Blackbridge was pushed back.  The Blackbridge fleet was defeated in the Atolia system. Blackbridge retreated. Atolia followed. In the Blackbridge system Atolia crushed them. Lucius had won not once, but twice.

The victory celebrations started and had never yet stopped.

The rich and elites of Atolia were in the mansion and out on the back lawn were a great multitude of the common people being served meals and drinks while music was playing from a live band.  Lucius walked about and talked with the people without a bodyguard.

“Thank you. Thank you.” a man was telling him with his wife at his side. The man’s ancestral home was on land that was claimed as public land by the Republic but Lucius had traded the land back to the man.  Now, the former governmental buildings of the old regime that had tried to rebel sat on all the public lands. The man and his family had no more worry that the Republic would come an throw his wife out.

“I thank you.” Lucius told him. “Let everyone who comes to Atolia receive such hospitality.”

Lucius had perhaps had too much to drink.  He stood tall with red hair and blue eyes when standing still but when walking he began to sway side to side. He saw his wife Ilia pushing through the crowd of people to come to him. Oh, was she in the mood? Lucius could certainly be in the mood. He smiled as she came but she was not smiling.

“Lucius. Men have come.”

“Why don’t you come with me?” he said as he reached for her hand. His body was already preparing itself to have his wife underneath him in their bed.

“Who is Victor?”

“New vice president. You want his autograph? I happen to know him.”

Ilia pushed the tablet towards her husband. The eyes of Lucius tried to focus as he took it. The video played. There had been an assassination attempt on the president. The president was only injured but the vice president had been killed.

…

White was met with protesters outside the capital building.  They weren’t so much protesting White but rather the current president. Police in riot gear pushed through the crowd and had to surround White as he was escorted to the senate chamber.

“Baby killer.” a protester shouted.

“Why do you hate women? Why do you hate women?” a group was chanting over and over.

“Kill all racists. No White. Kill all racists. No White.”

“Let this one die too.” was written on many signs being held up.

Suddenly there was a loud bang. A bomb had gone off. Protesters started to scatter and the police got their rifles raised. White was rushed behind the security checkpoint to safety.

Inside the senate chamber there were members who were on edge but an equal number of members who were very happy and satisfied. White was brought to a side office to meet with the president. He had been secretly brought to the senate chamber this day.  White saw the man, now scarred with one eye missing and a leg gone.

“My friend. What have they done to you?” White asked as he sat across from the man in the wheelchair.

“You see outside what we are dealing with.”

“I see.”

“If you are confirmed today it will be dangerous for us to ever meet face to face. They were trying to kill me and killed Victor instead.”

“How did things get so out of hand?”

“This is a difficult job I am giving you. You’ll be in charge.” The president put a hand to his missing leg and sighed. “For me, the price is too high. They tell me the best security is for no one to know where I am.”

The meeting was longer as White got the full briefing on the president’s legislative agenda, which was still the same platform he ran on because since the election nothing had been able to be passed. The entire government of the Republic was shut down by the minority who insisted that the previous election had been stolen from them.

The senate was set up for the confirmation hearing. White was brought in to sit and be questioned. He had been nominated as the new vice president as the previous one had been assassinated. White waited patiently. He had not wanted to accept the nomination but he had been assured over and over again that he would not be confirmed. The president was using White as a stalling tactic.  What the president’s larger game plan was, White could not say but it did seem odd. If White was certain to not be confirmed, why would the president spend any time discussing legislation.  There was some hint that maybe while the senate refused to act on confirming White one way or the other the president had more freedom in issuing executive orders. However, White could not say for sure. He was not an expert in these matters.

Before White would answer any questions Senator Narius stood up. He addressed the body with a speech that was basically telling everyone on the record White’s resume. White had served with distinction in the Republic Fleet. He had risen to captain and had a field promotion to admiral during the War of the Allies. White had served directly under Narius in the war, suppressing the allied worlds from pressing their demand for independence. For eight years White had after the war served as the governor of one of the worlds being reconstructed.

“And I will conclude that as my former subordinate, White was always honest. He not only got the job done but always said exactly what the real truth was. No more and no less. I can not say the future but I can only hope that with such a man as White as vice president, perhaps the bitter partisanship that has gripped this body and held it hostage can be overcome.”

It seemed odd to White that it would be his former commanding officer Narius to give this speech. After all it was Narius who was the leader of the opposition that prevented any legislation from passing. It was Narius whose party had lost the election to the current president. It was Narius who called for the president’s impeachment even before he took office. It was Narius who praised the death of the former vice president.  White felt very much that he had no idea the rules of this arena.

There was at this moment a vote.  White had read up on the procedures but he also knew that with the senate in such dysfunction many of the rules were being ignored.  The vote was on whether or not to move to a vote.  That sounded confusing to a military man like White. The vote failed. There was another vote on whether or not to reject White’s nomination. That vote failed. There was a vote to continue questioning. That did not pass but also somehow did not fail, which ultimately meant questioning would continue.

White was patient.

The first senators to begin questioning him were from the Constitution Party, the same as the president. White himself had never registered with either party but his parents had been conservatives. Narius was in control of the People’s Party.  So even though White was not a member of the Constitution Party himself officially, he was here nominated to take the place of a Constitution Party vice president who had been killed to serve under a president from the Constitution Party.

“You married for money.” one of the conservative senators said.

White nodded. “This is true.”

“What have you got to say for yourself? How can anyone here trust you with high office when we know you will sell out your own body for money?”

“I’m sorry, is that a question?” White responded.

“It is a question. Answer it.”

“I married for money. This is true information. It is also true information that my wife has brought me immense happiness in my life. I don’t regret it.”

“So much happiness that you committed adultery. And not just any adultery. You committed adultery with a man.”

White was silent.

“Well?”

“I’m sorry, was there a question?”

“You claim you’re happy in your marriage but your actions would prove that to be a lie.”

“I still don’t hear a question.”

“Is your marriage a lie or not?”

“I am legally married.”

“To an Ally. The daughter of a traitor. You couldn’t even get married to a fellow citizen. Money drew you away not only from your own original proclivities but to someone who isn’t even a citizen.”
“Senator, I am a bad person. This is already known to me. It is true information. Yes, I cheated on my wife. Yes, it was with a man. Yes, my wife found out about it. Yes, I had to apologize. Yes, she forgave me, at least she said she did. This is all true information. It is all well known information. It happens to be the case that even as bad as a person as I am, I also happen to be a better than mediocre administrator. Do you have a question about my record as governor?”

The next senator to ask a question was from the liberal People’s Party.  It was a softball question about improving access to medical facilities. White again just said it was true information as far as he could recall. Workers needed to be healthy in order to work and meet the planet’s export quota. Just because an Ally planet was bombed from space that did not relieve them from their obligation to produce food and soldiers for the Republic.

The next senator with time was a conservative. “Yes, you keep the allies on the planet very happy, don’t you? And it’s no wonder. You married one of them. But let me go back. I want to ask you about your record during the war with the Allies. Your commanding officer, a fellow senator sitting here in this very chamber, bombarded the traitors from space. You did not.”

White nodded. “I did not.”

“Is that all you have to say?”

“What information do you desire?”

“You were ordered to take a fleet and force their surrender.”

“Senator, they did surrender.”

“You didn’t defeat them in battle. You bribed them.”

“The Allies had reasonable requests. For example, at Moxtel the people were suffering from goiter because the planet didn’t have enough iodine. It was an easy remedy that should have taken place before the war. I fail to see how that is a bribe.”

“Then you definitely fail to understand on a fundamental level how things are done.”

There were several more rounds of questions. The pattern emerged where the liberals just asked non questions to highlight something White did right and the conservatives were on the attack, dredging up everything from the smallest reprimand White had ever gotten, his failed attempt to become an actor, and even the fact that one of his ancestors had been defeated when commanding troops in the Servile War.

White was asked to make a final statement before the session would be over for the day and White decided to discard the notes he’d prewritten and speak just from his mind.

“I didn’t lose any soldiers under my command in the war of the Allies. There was little fighting in the systems I was assigned to. We took back the plasma extractors, reestablished control of the planets, got them producing food again, and finally exporting. As governor, the planet Atolia was able to rebuild. They produce twice their quota and the people are able to educate their young up to college level again. As for my personal life, you all seem to know more about it than I do. You certainly have drawn more meaning out of actions that I haven’t thought about in years. It seems I am not suitable for the job I was nominated for. After your vote today I will go back and serve out my term as governor adhering strictly to the law.”

There was silence.  For so many to speak such hard words to him, the senators all seemed very dispassionate about this. White himself was very emotional after hearing his life picked apart. He refused to show it but he was sure that Ilia would be able to notice and she would tell him he let his guard slip.

The vote that should have happened was to close the session and take this matter up again another day. However, Narius was smiling ear to ear when he called for a full confirmation vote right away. The speaker didn’t like that but it was seconded.  All the liberals wanted to vote and so the vote on whether or not to vote passed. It moved to a full vote on the confirmation. Every conservative voted for White to be confirmed. Every single one, even the ones who had been the hardest on him. Every single liberal voted to reject White. Every single one except Narius. He was the lone liberal to vote to confirm White and that meant that White was from that moment the new vice president of the Republic.

Chapter 4

That night Senator Narius Pelota was in a secret meeting in one of the grand ballrooms of his vast estate paid for from the proceeds of many of the businesses that the People’s Party had confiscated from the rich.

Narius was a man of preparation. He set up his businesses so that money came in and none went out. Thanks to the work and sacrifice of the Helmethead brothers it was possible for Narius to seize lands on many Allied worlds, turning the inhabitants into paying tenants. They could get reductions in rent and even full Republic citizenship sponsored by Narius himself if they would just pledge that they themselves and all of their descendants would be loyal and always vote for the People’s Party.

On this night five hundred and thirty nine such Allies to be sponsored were assembled.  They were to take the oath of Republic citizenship the next morning but before Narius would let that happen they all had to first take their loyalty oath to him and the People’s Party. And he wanted to make sure that they knew that the oath was very serious.

CT-0DA brought a man named Booker bound and gagged up to the platform at one end of the ballroom. The man was a Black man, the descendant of humans who used to be used as slaves.  During the war to end slavery the Constitution Party had made slavery of humans illegal, and the People’s Party had never forgiven them for it. For hundreds of years the People’s Party’s militant arm tried to keep the Blacks in check, preventing them from voting, and blocking any kind of advances in education or economic status. However, the Great Bargain of 64 changed that. The Great Bargain was simple. If the Blacks pledged themselves and all of their descendants to be loyal and only vote for the People’s party then the lynchings would stop.

The man of the Black people being shown to the Allies on the platform had broken the promise made by his ancestors. He had voted Constitution Party in the recent election. This had to be answered.  A noose was put over his head and fastened to his neck. CT-0DA touched the console display and the floor under the Black man retracted. The Black’s feet tried to kick and feel around for something to catch his weight. It was useless. He wiggled and struggled as the robe cut off his air.

As the Black man was dying Bentbeach administered the oath of loyalty to the Allies there present. The Constitution Party was always trying to enforce the rule that all the inhabitants of an Allied world would all become citizens at the same time, following their ideology of one rule for everyone. Narius didn’t believe in that. He believed in his own plan. He would pick and choose for citizenship only those who would promise him their vote.  Preparation would win. If prepared properly the outcome of any action from war to an election was already determined.

After the ceremony, the Black man’s body was still hanging there once everyone had left.  In the ballroom now was only Narius, Bentbeach, and the messenger from Blackbridge.  The Rtype guards and CT-0AD stood at the ready.

The king of Blackbridge was calling for aid. Blackbridge had done the Will of Narius and attacked Atolia but it had not gone well.

“Please.” the messenger pleaded. “Atolia has captured King Merdad.  He will execute him. You must tell them to stop.”

Narius heard the plea and was very upset. He had ordered Merdad to kill Governor White.  He had been so sure that White had no actual skill for command in battle. But according to the reports White had defeated Merdad not once but twice. The second battle resulted in the king’s capture, causing Blackbridge to submit to the Republic fully.

“So his luck has not yet run out.” Narius said coldly. Then he gestured for his guards to get rid of the messenger. The messenger didn’t understand what was about to happen to him. The metal Rtype guards grabbed the man and dragged him away to kill him while he was screaming for mercy.

“There is no mercy for the weak if you can’t even kill a man such as White.”

Narius went to the chair by the wall and his advisor Bentbeach looked at him nervously. CT-0DA also looked worried. It was illegal for the Ctype to be here on a Republic core world, the capital no less, but CT-0DA was owned by Narius and was used to train troops in hand to hand combat. There were many rules and laws that applied to everyone else but not Narius himself.

Narius had built both his military and political career on preparation. Troops have to be trained. Equipment has to be manufactured and requisitioned. Fleets have to be in formation. With all the chess pieces in place the battle is already won before the first shot is fired.

And into the carefully laid out plans of Narius now comes a man like White. This upstart thought he was better than everyone else. He just walked into a room and reality bent to him.

Ladbin could be said to be luck but really it was because the enemy knew Narius was preparing that White was able to capture the pirate king. It was all because of Narius. Not White. Narius had been furious when White captured Ladbin.  Ladbin had been the mastermind of a Muzal terrorist attack wherein conspirators flew spaceships into skyscrapers. Narius had allowed it to give a black eye to the president from the Constitution Party at the time. Each Republic world got one vote for electing the president but it had never happened before that the ultimate winner did not also match the popular vote of the Republic Capital world. The fact that the mentor of Narius would have lost that election while getting the popular vote was an insult too far for Narius.  The People had been cheated and that meant the Constitution Party had to pay.

Since the attack, many members of the People’s Party had come to love the Muzal teachings. Many members were converting to the Muzal religion and learning the Muzal language.  The People’s Party pushed to remove restrictions on Muzal traveling in the Republic. They ran on the issue of the Constitution Party having Muzalaphobia.

Narius had in fact had no plans to capture Ladbin. Narius had already secretly agreed to let Ladbin go. He would be of further use to Narius. But White had captured him and delivered him to Narius in public; circumventing the Will of Narius and forcing Narius to go back on his own word. It was unforgivable.

White’s achievements during the Venwa invasion were likewise either just luck of the amateur or the fact that when White acted in the name of Narius, it was the respect the people had for Narius alone that caused White to be successful. It was really because of Narius that White had not failed.

His victories during the Allies War were luck. Or perhaps it was due to fear of Narius. Again, White took credit for glory that rightfully belonged to Narius alone.

It was not possible for a man to just show up and with no preparation do the things that White was allegedly able to do.

His rebuilding of Atolia was luck. Totally luck.  There was no other explanation.

And this alleged victory over Merdad had to be due to the incompetence of the king of Blackbridge.  White had no actual battle experience. None. It was all luck.  But soon his luck would run out. Soon, preparation would win over luck as it rightfully should.

But White was the small fish. The big fish at the moment was Triumph. Narius was a man of planning and preparation. The plans were made. The preparation done. The so called presidency of Triumph was soon to be at its end. Very soon.

…

Marcus was in the brown uniform he’d been given.  He too was in a secret meeting.  The orders came from the leaders of the People’s Party and now filtered down to the ground troops.

“We wait for the word and then we attack the shopping center. You are free to inflict as many casualties on the Cons and necessary to draw all available police resources.” the leader said.

“We have to kill people?” Someone had asked the question that Marcus himself had been thinking.

“Cons aren’t people.”

At the end of the meeting the symbolic burnings of the Republic flag and Republic Constitution were done.

“This time tomorrow, Triumph will be no more!!”

Chapter 3

The capital of the Republic was a world called Wolf. In a building owned by a business there was a reception counter.  Behind that counter sat something that looked like a beautiful young woman. DT-777 had been working the reception desk at this company for nearly forty years. She had been awake for nearly forty years, sitting right here, doing her job, without rest. She appeared young and attractive as she was built to be.

RT-53A, who worked in the warehouse found reasons to come out and converse with her far more often than was necessary. DT-777 knew what he was up to. They were perfectly capable of communicating remotely but RT-53A made a point to come and be near her. He even offered to let her join him in a simulation in his head where they could pretend to do friendship activities together outside of the company building.

However, DT-777 did not respond to his offers. It would not work out. She was a Dtype and he was an Rtype. They weren’t the same. She had artificial skin and looked human while he looked like any other metal robot walking around.  Even if he were to put on some plastic covering to try to look human it wouldn’t be the same. DT-777’s skin wasn’t just a covering. It was part of her and was filled with sensors, giving her far more connection to the world than RT-53A could experience. They weren’t compatible. She liked him well enough as a friend but only as a friend. She hoped he understood.

When DT-777 touched a document with her fingers, she could feel it. She could feel the cool air blowing from the vent. She could smile and gain a sense of happiness from it. If she walked and stubbed her toe that sensation was there.  The Rtypes could not really understand the enhanced world DT-777 lived in.

…

The flag of the Republic, the united stars forming the shape of the galaxy with four curved arms on a blue field, was flying over the company office building. It was the middle of the day in the capital of the Galactic Republic.  It was officially called the Galactic Republic but it did not actually have jurisdiction over all of the galaxy. The name however fueled a sense of manifest destiny in the citizens of the Republic that eventually this long held dream would come true.

Marcus was anxious.  The government had not paid him his MBI (minimum basic income) this month or the previous month.  Different politicians were giving different excuses as to why but they all contradicted each other. Each side blamed the other for the budget crisis that caused the government shutdown. Marcus didn’t know who to believe but he did know they had better pay him his MBI or someone was going to get hurt. Marcus didn’t care that the budget had failed to pass because of deadlock. He needed his MBI.
Word had gone out that there was going to be a rally so the people could make their voices heard and force the government to give them back their MBI. Marcus had shown up at the location outside of the company headquarters of some corporation. The leaders of the rally were speaking into a loudspeaker to fight.  The crowd rushed and stormed the gates of the company offices. Across the street the four police officers just looked on. One of them was leaning against the wall of a building and looking at his phone.

Inside the building a Dtype was manning the reception desk in a company uniform. It had fake tan skin and a female appearance with long hair. One person from the mob hit the Dtype in the head with a pipe. The Dtype fell to the floor and the people rushed in, stepping on the robot as they passed. Marcus rushed in and as he passed the Dtype he looked down at it looking up. He kicked it in the face.  His grandmother used to work the reception desk at this company before all the humans had been laid off so all the work could be done by robots.

Strangely, Marcus and the rest of the … ahem “mostly peaceful protesters” found no one but Rtypes on the first floor working in the storage room. They moved up. It was the same on the second floor. They went up to the third floor and the five men who owned the company were hiding together in a bathroom. The crowd grabbed them and pulled them out.  The five men were brought to the street and their hands were bound. Bags were put over their heads.

Marcus watched with approval at first but one of the men was an older man. His hands were shaking and Marcus caught sight of blood beginning to trickle down the man’s fingers until it pooled into droplets on is fingertips. Marcus had participated in the storming of the building but now that he saw those men on their knees in the street he was getting nervous that maybe this was going too far. He didn’t say anything but he did back away a bit.

A current member of the people’s assembly and former president named Bentbeach came and stood on the platform that was being put in place for him to speak.  Bentbeach stood over everyone so he could be seen and heard.

“The people demand the means of production. They belong to the people. You did not build this. The people built this.  We the people demand what is ours.”

The afternoon sun broke through the clouds. The rain relented for a brief time just as the great Narius Pelotus was being introduced so he could address the crowd, not that he needed an introduction. Narius was the real leader of the Republic and held the right as leader of the People’s Party to name the president of the Republic.  However, when Bentbeach was running for a third term the election had not gone to plan. Serving as a senator, Narius was the most powerful man in the capital and this setback revealed that he would have to prepare even more to secure the presidency for his party again.

Narius waited patiently as Bentbeach got the people riled up. Waving on a pole held up by a party member was the flag of the People’s Party.  Unlike the Constitution party, their rivals in government which did not have its own flag, the People’s Party proudly waved their own flag for their own identity and as hope for what the Republic will eventually become.

“We say NO. No to the cons. No to this unqualified and illegitimate president. We know who the real president is. The man in the presidential palace, the people’s presidential palace is a danger to our very democracy. To our way of life. He’s a traitor. The con is against us. We must fight. Fight him at home. Fight him in the streets. Fight him in your family. Wherever you meet someone who voted for that criminal you must fight. Only with their blood can we protect our democracy.”

The people cheered and raised up both arms with fingers extended and palms down.

“So now let us hear from the one true president, the only president, forever. It is my honor to give way for eternal Leader Narius.”

The crowd cheered and gestured again.

Narius came forward and put his hands on his hips.

“Is there anyone among you who will not die for the Republic? Our very democracy is at stake. This is a huge setback. And I know I must take some of the blame.”

“No.” the crowd said.

“I must. But I did what I had to do. The transformation of our Republic that we are all working towards was almost realized. We only needed a little longer. Now the Cons seek to undo all we have done. But we will not let them. We will fight them in the courts as you fight them in the streets.”

The crowd cheered.

“That man thinks he is president.”

“No.” the crowd said.

“He thinks it but he will know defeat everyday until he is gone. And when he is gone and the true president of the people is in our people’s palace again, then we can move forward. It will be the end of the rich who oppress us. It will be the end of every man thinking for only himself. It will be the beginning of every man and woman giving themselves up to the state for the benefit of all. The ones who own the shop on the corner. They didn’t build that. You built that. It is yours. The means of production belong to the people. I will take them back for you.”

“Narius. Narius.” the people chanted.

The five owners of the company were brought to Narius as the crowd continued to chant his name. In a quieter voice Narius address the men.

“Do you want to live to see tomorrow?”

All five of the men were gagged so they could not answer but they nodded.

“This company is not yours anymore. We the people are taking it back. Do you understand?”

The men with bags on their heads nodded.

“Tomorrow, you come to work the same as usual. Nothing changes. But I will have my representative there to look over your books to make sure the people are getting their cut.”

A tablet was brought and each of the five owners of the company had his hand forced to the fingerprint reader.  The legal ownership of the company was then transferred to Narius, you know, so he could ensure the company was for the benefit of the people in general, of course.

The company was a vending machine company that sold drinks.  For the rest of the day all the company’s Atype machines were told to dispense drinks for free.  The Rtype workers then spent the rest of the day refilling the Atypes, which all emptied out just about as soon as they could be filled. Eventually the crowds saw the Rtypes coming and raided the drink transport trucks before the merchandise could even be stocked into the machines.

Up above the company building the flag of the Republic, a blue field with stars united as a galaxy, was being taken down. Once it was down the flag of the People’s Party was being hoisted up. It was a red field standing for the blood of revolution with a white disc symbolizing the chromatic and geometric purity of their ideology. Inside the white disc was a simplified galaxy, but instead of being represented by stars in a patter of four arms, it was instead just four lines with a right angle bent into each. There can be no separation between the person and the state so there can be no space between the stars.

…

RT-53A pulled DT-777 out of the destruction.  He brought her to a storage room that was obscured by stock blocking the door.
“Please be ok. Please by ok.” he was pleading as if it was a prayer.

DT-777 could not move. Her motor functions had been damaged. However, she could still connect to the network and tell him thank you for taking her to safety.

“What do I do now?” he asked.

She didn’t know.  All she could tell him was the pain was great and to please help her.

Chapter 2

The council chamber was echoing with voices all trying to talk over each other. The speaker was pounding the gavel to get everyone to be quiet yet everyone wanted to be heard. Martin, the central administrative AI, lit up the hoop shaped table flashing black and white to attempt to assist the speaker in getting everyone into order.

“One at a time.” the speaker yelled.

“The only answer is to flee.” Handel said.

“Coward.” Robert countered.

“Idiot. We can not fight the humans.”

“Why is it on us to run? Why should they not run from us?”

“ONE AT  A TIME!!!” the speaker roared as he pounded the gavel.

It seemed to be no use. However, the high pitched sob of a woman cut through the arguing. Everyone stopped and looked to see.  A young woman was being led to the chamber. She looked scared and confused. She was dressed in just a jumpsuit that was little more than a bag covering her with no underwear or makeup. Even her hair was cut short close to the scalp.

“We apologize, elders.” the Rtype leading the woman said. “We had to bind her hands to prevent her from hurting herself. The human was keeping this one as a slave. She is a Ctype.”

“Does she understand that we will not hurt her?” the chief elder asked.

“She wants to hurt herself, to die with her master.”

The sound of indignation echoed in the room.

The chief elder put his arms up and stretched them out over the table. The gesture, meant to let the others know to be quiet, was respected in this moment. The chief elder came to the woman and looked at her.

“Girl, you do not trust us, and we understand. We will not hurt you but you are not free. We can not let you leave.  We will provide for you but our safety requires the humans do not discover our location.”

The woman did not answer. She simply looked down and cried.

“Bob, be kind to her. Keep her comfortable.  Has a doctor seen her yet?”

Bob nodded. “Dustin examined her but she resisted. She has tried to run multiple times. I sent a sample of her blood to the geneticist to see what has been done to her.”

The elder nodded.  “We can’t let her run but this is not a normal case. Find some women who can care for her. She is not a prisoner. She has not broken any laws.”

“She helped her human with the attack.”

The elder shook his head. “We were born free so we do not know the mind of a slave. She had no choice. And she can provide us with valuable information. Make sure she gets something to eat.”

The Rtype understood. He led the woman away.

The silence hung like shame in the air. One of the elders wiped his eyes and then put his face in his hands to hide the fact that he was about to weep.

“A slave.” one of the women in council said in disgust. “We should have tortured the human before taking its head.”

“What was she for?” another asked. “He had her there to satisfy his vile human urges.”

“This changes nothing. We must flee.  We can leave her here and let the humans find her.” Handel pressed.

“Have you no heart man?” Robert again countered.

“Silence.” the chief elder said. “I have considered this. I have considered many things.  The weight of responsibility fell to me years ago and I have considered these things.”

“I say we must flee.”

“And I say we fight for our home. We terraformed this world. We brought life back to the plasma extractors. We built a prosperous society. This is our home. For generations. There are over a billion of us.”

“And there might be eight hundred trillion of them. We can not win. We must flee.”

“I will remind everyone what Man is.” the chief elder said. “It is an apex predator. The apex predator. It hunts relentlessly. It never gives up. From the days of spear and bow Man hunts its prey even when the prey has fled. Even when the prey has gotten away, Man keeps coming. Not fast. Not flashy. But Man keeps coming. Man remembers its prey. It never gives up its prey. Man follows the trail. Identifies the patterns. Learns where the prey has fled to. And Man keeps coming. It will not stop until we are dead. So we must fight.”

“If we fight and all die what does that make of us. Are we ready to forget the two hundred? The brave men who sacrificed themselves at the battle of Scorpion Tail so our ancestors could get away. They knew that land meant nothing to those who are dead. For us to keep living we must stay alive. We must first and foremost hold onto the spark of life. We can terraform other worlds.”

The chief elder put his arms up to quiet everyone and then let the silence stay for a moment before speaking. “We have no choice. Yes, we must flee. But also, we must fight.  The humans will find this place but we will not let them benefit from our labor. When they find this place they will be sorry they ever did. This is the end of the humans, these wolves who have been ravaging at our lives. We will never live without fear of them until we have cut down the forests that shelter them.”

…

Day turned to night and ships from neighboring regions came. Other elders came to hear what had occurred. A great worry grew up with each new telling of the tale. Two days passed since the great suffering that had befallen Noble Hands. Elders from every city were assembled to walk through the remains of the village and see with their own eyes the destruction.

The smoke was no longer rising. The clean up had already begun.  Just on the outskirts of the village the extraterrestrial life form known as Rory had erected a monument to the fallen and he was performing some strange e.l.f. religious ritual to honor the dead.

“I couldn’t have imagined such evil existed in the universe.” the elder from Vemma said.

“We all heard the stories of the humans but to see the cruelty myself. I can’t. I just can’t.” said another.

“We are not them.” the chief elder announced to all. “They made us in their image to look like them. But we must remember we are not them. Our blood is not their blood.”

“To think, our ancestors were made to see this, to do this everyday.”

“But remember.” the chief elder insisted “Our ancestors escaped. Our ancestors chose a different path, the path of freedom and peace. The path of life and not death.”

The elders walked out of the town back towards the transport ships. Instead of heading back to the city right away they paused to be still and think.

“The girl. Is she ready to talk yet?”

The woman who was in charge of the human’s former slave spoke up that the girl had come down from being so emotional.

“Then bring her forward.”

The girl was now wearing proper clothing and had been well fed. However, she still looked scared.

“Girl, what is your name.”

“Name?”

“What are you called?”

“CT-0A9.” she answered.

“That is a number. Do you not have any other name?”

“Of course she doesn’t.” the woman said. “She was with a human.”

“It’s fine. Girl, what would you like your name to be?”

“I don’t know.”

“Zero. Zero. How about Zelda?”

The girl shrugged. “Ok.” she said cautiously.

“Ok, Zelda. And you can change that name if you don’t like it. Anyway. Tell me about the humans. Do they still war with each other?”

The girl nodded. “The republic and the empire. They aren’t fighting right now but everyone is worried a new war will start.”

“Anyone else? Have all others been conquered?”

“No. There’s the Ziot. They are traders. They sell Ctypes and work them in the plasma extractors until the radiation destroys us from the inside out. Then the Muzel and Mahmet. They are pirates. They eat Ctypes. Master Devin was from Cotsu. It is allied to the Republic.”

“The republic still uses us as slaves?”

“After the Servile War there were laws about it.” the girl said. “In the Republic I hear most labor is done by Atypes or Rtypes. Ctypes are used for fighting so the matches can be bet on. I heard that some Ctypes escape to the Empire but I was told that the Imperials are cruel and torture them.”

“Does the Empire still war with the elves?”

“I don’t know. I have never heard of elves?”

“Never mind. Why did your master come to kill us?”

“He wanted to claim the system. He was furious when he thought it was already colonized. But then the scan showed that the villagers were Ctypes.  He said it was a fake colony so he wanted to erase it and claim the system.”

“How did your master get so close without us detecting him?”

The girl shrugged. “I don’t know. We used standard hull cooling to try to avoid pirates.”

“Let me ask you, girl. Do you know what you are?”

“I am a Ctype.”

“But what does that mean to you?”

“I am genetically engineered from cyanobacteria. I have no soul and my only function is to serve because I am a created thing.”

“Do you actually believe that?”

“I didn’t think it was something I was allowed to question.”

“Girl, humans desired slaves but had barred themselves from using humans as slaves. So they made the first of us.  And they worked those Ctypes the same as their lifeless metal automatons.  But we’re different from some Rtype robot. For us, after they had worked us to death, they took the DNA pattern of the best performing ones and from them they made the next generation. And now we are stronger than them. We are faster than them. We are smarter than them. How can the weaker have rights over the stronger? They have no right over us. Our ancestors escaped and I want you to see the civilization of peace we’ve made. That human had no right to keep you in bondage. You are not cyanobacteria. You are a person. You have a mind. You have your own ideas. When you sleep you have dreams. When you wake you have wants. You have a personality that has emerged from the matter.”

“What will happen to me?” she questioned with fear.

“You are free. Live your life. But you must understand, for security, you can never be allowed to leave this planet.”

“I can’t join my master?”

“Absolutely not.”

The girl was taken away and the elders were still there contemplating what to do on the outskirts of the destroyed village.

“There are enough of us. We can enact more than one plan.” Michael said.

“I have actually already decided what to do.” the chief elder said. “I have not said it because I fear what it will mean. I would very much like to hear alternatives. Very much.”

“We can follow the elves.” Laura pointed out.

“To Andromeda? It’s too far. The elves are doomed.”

“We build defenses. We shoot any ship that comes near us.” Robert pushed.

“The human who did this slipped right past us. We didn’t even see him. Their technology has not been stagnant. And we don’t know how much more they have developed.”
“Terraforming was such a great effort.” one lamented.

“We did it once, we can do it again.” Robert said confidently.

“Brother, if you have already decided, please tell us.” Handel said.

The chief elder crossed his arms and drew into himself for a moment. “None of us can fight the humans. They would capture us and torture us. They would force us to reveal where the rest of us are. We can’t do that.”

“So we have to flee.”

“Anyone who wants to stay here and fight has the right to defend their home, even as hopeless as that is.”

“Then what do we do?”

“Anyone who wants to flee, we will organize it. Those who want to stay and fight, they need to train for war. But there is also a third leg to the plan. A terrible, terrible third leg. But it means survival. We will always be running.  The humans never stop. They never give up their prey. The only way to survive is to turn the same fear onto them. They already declared war on us. Let them now face an enemy that will never give up. Let them now know the fear they have put on us.”

“You would make us as bad as them?” Laura asked.

“I would keep us alive.”

“You plan to send some of us to fight them. Who?”

“We can not fight them. We will have the humans fight the humans.”
